De D 112 is de opvolger van de beroemde ‘zeepklopper’, de D12. De D112 heeft een rijker frequentiespectrum dan z’n illustere voorganger. In verhouding tot bijvoorbeeld de Sennheiser E 602 heeft deze dynamische microfoon een opener geluid en daardoor geschikter voor akoestisch, minder gehypte kickdrums. De microfoon is ook goed te gebruiken op basversterkers.
